Hey everybody!
Well, my apologies for the delay in any response regarding our return. We (Jojo and I) were back home last Saturday, July 3rd, after leaving on June 19th.

To those who don't know, for quite a while we have been planning a cross country trip, originally slated as an escort for my buddy Doug who was riding out to Washington state to live for a a few months.
The project turned into "Wees Gone West", sponsored by yours truly.
A journey that would take Jojo and I from New York City to the Grand Teton Mountain range and Nat'l Park in Wyoming. We would meet my friend Doug at his sisters house in Columbus Ohio on day 2 and ride west from there - no interstates!

So, the heat and post vacation blues have gotten me exhausted as I'm sure it is affecting everybody out there, and all I have for now is a "quick" little ride report with a few photos that were very hard to chose from the 2000 that we took.

Enjoy!

"Three riders embark on a journey. A journey of necessity. Escaping the dangers of monotony and the deadly existence with which we've become far too comfortable. Adventure in their souls, crying for release, they search for the answer on the open road." - back of Wees Gone West shirt.
The vast openness of the West (this may be Illinois) is mind boggling. This is one facet of the trip I needed and greatly looked forward to: plenty of time to think, just me and the open road.

What can I say about the trip except for the fact that it was absolutely amazing. It was fraught with mental and physical challenge and endurance, and abundant in its rewards of personal growth and the most incredible visions of land and skyscapes.
Some may think it's not a big deal, but packing for a two week camping adventure 2200 miles from home, in a range of temps from 95-35 degrees, 2 UP on one bike took a lot of planning, research and testing to be successful.
I'm proud to say that gear selection worked perfectly the entire time.
I can't say enough about this bike as once again it didn't have the slightest hiccup, after 5900 miles, or at 11k feet.
Jojo and I split off from Doug to come back home, but not before petting some wild Buffalo. "Here boy, c'mon cutie. Who's such a cute little boyyy?"

From 85 degrees to a snowball fight. Jojo won by the way, she's got a mean arm!
The piez de resistance for the trip was this little gem right here, Devil's Tower or more appropriately originally titled by the Native American Indians - Bear Tipi. I can cross this off my bucket list now.

Ole Blue and the Tower, love it.

J5 signing out for now.

Well, I have to admit, the heat got to me today. Heat normally doesn't bother me which is why I have no problem hanging out in places like Haiti and Cuba. The first 120 miles were OK, I just made sure I kept myself hydrated. But the last 30 miles or so I was on 287N coming up from New Brunswick. Between the heat at 102F, the heat coming off the pavement and the heat off all the vehicles, it was like I had a hair dryer blowing in my face. The only time it felt that hot to me was when it hit 140F in my kitchen at my last restaurant....and I almost passed out. By the time I got home, I felt woozy and nauseous. It took me a few hours to recover. I feel better but still a little woozy.

All in all, a good lesson learned. Next time, get in the car and turn on the A/C in extreme heat.

So as i sit here this morning writing this small piece i have yet been reminded of how fragile we are and the dangers that come along with being a "motorcyclist".

I started my riding life at about 11yrs old on a suzuki FZ50 witch i rode for a couple of years after that lets just say its been a blur of bikes, lately i find myself logging about 15k to 20k round the year riding and i would say that 3k to 4k of that is the commuting and regular errands thingy, the rest is playing as i would like to call it, on that note I would like to consider myself somewhat of a "motorcyclist".

On a personal note motorcycling more than being a hobby or passion has not only saved my life from the bowels of chronic depression but it has given me quality of life without the need of medication.

This morning at about 530am as i was driving down the GSP for work i pulled up to the scene of yet again another tragic fatality at the apex of a wide sweeper past exit 115, it was apparent it had just occured because LEO was just deploying flares around the scene and several others were responding to the scene, it was also apparent it was a DOA, the remains of a sports bike layed mangled all over the fast lane and the medium guard rail, also what i would like to call the majority of the deceased layed well over 300 feet past the wreck not covered yet, i say majority because there was also human debris all over.

Yet another lost soul, yet another lost son, yet another lost loved one and possibly yet another lost loved father......to whom, probably not to motorcycling but to excess of speed and lack of caring for ones self,
those around you and those that love you.

yet another family in tears, yet another family in mourning....

This will certainly not keep me from riding and it will probably slow me down a bit for a week or two but lets not forget how fragile we are and the dangers that come with this shared passion of ours.

New Jersey Motorcycle Accident Fatality Rates Drop in 2009

After 11 years of rising motorcycle accident fatality rates in New Jersey, there is some good news from the Governors’ Highway Safety Association. There is expected to be a substantial drop in motorcycle crash fatality rates for 2009 in New Jersey and nationwide.

The data only includes figures for the first nine months of 2009, but the agency says that the rates are low enough to expect that when final totals are tabulated, the overall motorcycle crash fatality rate for 2009 will be more than 10% lower. 2009, therefore, marks the first year in more than 11 that these rates have actually dropped.New Jersey has been very successful in controlling its motorcycle accident fatality rates. In 2009, there were 59 fatalities, compared to 72 in 2008. That was a drop of 13 fatalities since the previous year.

The GHSA is putting out a number of theories for this decline. Unfortunately, it seems like the financial recession which has also impacted auto accident fatalities, has contributed to a drop in motorcycle fatality rates too. Fewer motorcycles were sold in 2009, and fewer people were inclined towards recreational riding. Besides, there were also fewer numbers of middle-aged motorcyclists in 2009, and this group is at a high risk for accidents and fatalities.

Besides, several states have responded positively to the increasing rate of motorcycle crash fatalities over the past few years. Many states have required mandatory motorcycle safety training programs before a person begins riding a motorcycle, and helmet laws have been strengthened. States have invested in enhanced safety programs which include raising awareness among motorists about motorcyclist safety. This has led to fewer collisions, and hence, fewer fatalities.
