Full Version: Question about stator longevity and draw

Hey folks, a statement and a question:

As stator longevity is affected by how much power you draw, where is the point where you're 'burning out the stator'?

Is it when you start dipping into the battery?

I don't think I've ever had my digital meter below 12.0. Today was a day where I had it there for a while...just thinking and realizing there's a hole in my understanding, which is probably linked to the one in my head. Smile
i dunno i think i have that same hole... the stator runs all the time and it will do that effectively so long as the wires that connect it to the rectifer are properly connected... when mine whet it was the ground that broke off or cooked off or whatever it was but it was the wire that came lose and cooked things... Cooked is a relative term i think because all they did was replace it and rewire the connections... the copper wires and the magnetic coils are what overheat and burn? is burn a good term? at any rate it stops delivering a charge to the rectifier which charges the battery and produces the current which powers all the gear on the bike... i don't think dipping into the battery voltage hurts in small doses... i would plug the bike in every night to make sure its ready in the am especially in the cold weather... too many dips into the battery vs what the bike delivers and you kill the battery but i don't think you do anything to the stator... it spins and produces current flow no matter what... its the ability of the bike to translate that to a charge that will reload the battery...

thanks for reading i have no idea what i am talking about except a failed stator is like being pregnant... there is no gray area your stator is either good or bad... if bad your bike will start a few times and it will run to the point the battery juice dies down and the bike is not getting what it needs to run 300watts + or - a few watts... mine ran for a few miles and did a few restarts and that was it... the baby was in the womb!

the voltage meter will help you see there is a problem generating juice and then bam! right when you need it most its done... fertilization has occurred most likely the ground wire cooked off... the bike is dead...

if your warranty is done order one and we'll replace it here... i always wanted to replace a stator... how hard could it be? take out the old put in the new... connect the wires and close it up... with 10 empanadas i bet we can do it in a day! :-)

thanks for ready... i still have no idea what i am talking about and why are you still reading this?
Bill,
As you overload it 2 things will happen. 1 you may cook the plug coming off the stator or the R/R will cook. 2 you cook the stator.

One thing most people don't know is a volt meter is not telling you all that much.
Volts and amps.
You can still have 12.8 vdc coming from the battery even tho your eating it up cuz your using all of the 100 watts the bike has to offer... But if your running lower then 12. vdc your not in a good place and you need to act ASAP. If you drop for a min or two and your back up in rpms then you should be ok. If your in stop and go kill your e gear.. I would pull one of your headlights for the winter... Go HID and still pull one just to be safe and plug the bike in every night and when parked at work if you can... Our battery's don't like the cold much..

What are you running the most??? Gloves?? Jacket??? Call me and I can give you tips on ways around using your e gear as much as you do now... I ran a ZX6 1200 miles a week all winter with just lite gloves on and no e gear and did just fine. I was a bit younger and that did help but it's what I used that let me ride as long and as cold as I did...

Ride smart and you can look like your crazy and be safer then ever...
I'm running the gloves right now, but I was testing the liner today just to see where I can run it. Running it HOT (for me) I can still keep it above 12.3 on my readout.
Oh, Jorge, yes I read everything!

And Tammy, stay alert, stay alive!
I can run gloves on full and a 100 watt liner and at 2k I'm at 13.9vdc..
HIDs play a big part in that and I run both.
The way I dress with my gear I only need to be at 10% on the liner to be warm when it's 10f out.. Key is in how you dress. I start with a T shirt my liner is next and then my Firstgear. If it's below 30 I go with a fleace pullover with a short zipper to go over the liner and I'm good all day.. Hands.... Pull the handgaurd and replace them with Handguard Gauntlets made for snowmobiles

Same ones I used on my ZX and they cost 17.00
With them your e gloves will be home 99% of the time...
And yes they are safe and easy to get your hands in and out even at ZX speeds LOL...

I may put mine on my WR ...
Thanks my friend.

I do layer, base ColdGear (thanks Army), shirt over it, my heated liner, then another liner over that, windproof golf jersey over that and then my Darien.

I'm a cold natured SOB anymore. My wife says two tours in the desert heat will do that. I'm now inclined to agree.
Give it time it will come back. The colder it gets the more I can take..
