I was out riding a crooked road near where I live and came around a right hand sweeper running about 50, all heeled over at a moderate angle and this deer scampers across the road right in front of me. Funny think was, she never saw me till she was halfway across the road and then she kicked into passing gear and got on across. I probably cleared her by 10 feet or thereabouts, when I saw her (it was a doe) I grabbed a little front brake and she went right on by. Still, occurances like that give one pause to think what would have happened with less clearance than that??? There was no way to prepare for that encounter except to slow to a crawl, and I can't really see that as a real solution.
I have been in deer accidents in cars when the deer ran into the side of the car. These incidents happened at night which is different than the one mentioned above. At night, periferal vision is reduced and there is no real way to see things coming at you from a right angle. If the deer had run into the side of me, I am not sure I would have lived to tell this story...like I said, it gives one pause....
Good timing. I tore home on the 250 from Hoboken to Burliington last night and rode like I was the only living thing on the planet.

...need to stop and think.

Thanks.
That's the best kind of riding Bill
Right? I know! It was nice to cut to the front of every line--riding in the city kinda brings out the hoodlum in me.
Riding in the city is a lil like riding out in the woods sometimes.. Makes you a better rider..
tell me about it, i have done tons of riding in nyc and grew up riding in a pretty traffic congested city...i always tend to white line when in traffic but no crazy stuff, i just take my time and clear one by one at no more then 15 to 20 mph, i have yet to date gotten anybody complaining, its ok as long as ur prudent, cautious and courteus to other drivers, i hate it when those aholes on sport bikes just dart thru the middle at 40/50 mph w no regard for their safety or others, i have even come across cops and never have one pull me over or so much as blink
+1 to the city riding improving the skills. The last trip I took to DC sharpened up my observance skills quite a bit. Gonna do that again this coming weekend. Should be good fun. Tammy, if you ride like a demon possessed all the time, let me express my wonder and surprise that you are still with us. Yikes! I wish I could get away with that! Big Grin

i did a lot of city riding when i was in philly....the reason i got meself a 140 db horn to keep those pesky taxi drivers off u.....but riding the white linei never ever did that in philly....one reason being the traffic police.....i ogt pulled over for doing it in a jammed traffic...i sat in it for 20 mins before making thru the traffic and i got caught...but the police never catch those squids buzzing thru....
be safe and try to make obvious when riding the city.....a lot of people driving cars are preoccupied....not only cell fones but also lost in thoughts....

36 yrs and I hope to ride another 36
well I guess there is something to the notion that your time is up whenever that happens...but I sure don't wanna exit this life prematurely unless that saves me the pain of dying of cancer or something else really uncomfortable. Dying from a bike wreck might be the best way to go. Fast, no time to wonder if you made the right choice, and its over. Any thoughts on that? Do we as motorcyclists face our mortality or do we pretend it doesnt exist?
